First Annual Harvard Thinks Big Symposium
Saturday, February 13, 2010Thank you so much to everyone who attended Harvard Thinks Big on Thursday night! Please stay tuned for all the event footage on www.HUTVNetwork.com.
On February 11, more than one thousand students poured into Sanders Theater, excited to hear 10 top Harvard University professors share their big ideas. Professors Andrew Berry, Glenda Carpio, Diana Eck, Daniel T. Gilbert, Matthew Kaiser, David J. Malan, Timothy Patrick McCarthy, Steven Pinker, Maria Tatar, and Richard Wrangham each had ten minutes to speak about the subjects and visions they are most passionate about.
The professors spoke about a wide range of topics, from global warming to cooking to religion to the financial crisis. Students were particularly excited about the Big Idea from Compuer Science lecturer, David J. Malan ’99. Malan introduced a website built to provide students a base to propose suggestions on how to improve the Harvard campus, which would be addressed by Computer Science 50 students next year. Other speakers at HTB included renowned psychology professor and author, Steven Pinker, who spoke about human violence, as well as African American Studies and English professor Glenda Carpio, who discussed the cultural importance of hip-hop.
Harvard Thinks Big was sponsored by the College Events Board, Harvard Undergraduate Television, and the Undergraduate Council.
